The first cases were diagnosed Oct. 14 in Barn A. Five Jimmy DiVito-trained horses were neurological cases and two died. Three other trainers had horses in the barn housing 73 horses and the 35 survivors who tested positive were isolated in a quarantine barn.
During October the virus spread to other barns but through Nov. 13 there were no new cases reported for 18 days and it appeared the virus had been arrested.
Then the virus resurfaced Nov. 14 in Barn E where five horses tested positive and one of the three with the neurological symptoms, a Dale Bennett-trained filly, was euthanized after she fell while walking between barns and was unable to get up.
