ISLAMABAD—Amnesty International has accused the Pakistani military of carrying out widespread human rights abuses in the country's northwest tribal region where the army is fighting a domestic Taliban insurgency.
The London-based group said in a report Thursday that the military has regularly held people without charges and tortured or otherwise mistreated them in custody.
It says some detainees do not survive and are returned to their families dead, or their corpses are dumped in remote parts of the tribal region.
The report says the military acts with impunity with the help of laws that provide cover for abuse.
The military did not immediately respond to request for comment.
Amnesty also criticized the Taliban for a range of rights abuses, including the killings of captured soldiers and innocent civilians.
